A brief description of some projects that I've been involved in.
Queen's College
I've been involved as the IT consultant for Queen's College for almost ten years. Due to many years of neglect, Queen's IT was effectively a green fields site in 2002. I established a focus around the practical application of technology (not just technology for technology's sake) to extend and strengthen the College community. This guiding goal was then the basis on which the entire IT infrastructure and programs of work were refreshed. College communications were centralised to a newly built intranet which continues to evolve and remains one of the most advanced and integrated intranets of all the University of Melbourne colleges. The IT facilities at Queen's College have now become the core component for the operation of the College.
I continue to provide a consultancy role to the College around the use of technology for gaining business efficiencies, community development and management, social media and the use of technology to compliment the teaching and support programs of the College.
The Big Issue
The Big Issue is a non-profit organisation that produces a fortnightly non-political current affairs magazine. It is sold on the street for $5 by homeless people with half the proceeds of every sale going directly to the vendor. In this way, The Big Issue ‘helps the homeless help themselves'.
I volunteered my time as an IT consultant providing IT strategic advice and commencing a redesign of their website. One highlight was creating the Homeless Writers Online site which featured the writings of homeless people giving them a voice.
Whitley College
When I joined Whitley College at the start of 1997, its IT facilities were aging and haphazard. Through lack of funding, expertise and commitment, the IT facilties at Whitley played a very insignificant role in College life. My role was to lead the transformation of Whitley's IT facilities to become state of the art with respect to the other Colleges in the area.
By the time I left four years later, Whitley College was a community of students linked via their intranet - be it getting the latest College news, ordering meals, or submitting maintenance requests online. Online security webcams monitored the College foyer, phone bills could be viewed and lunch ordered via the intranet.
Most significantly, all of this was run and maintained by the College residents. An ongoing in-house training program ensures that the expertise is maintained from year to year ensuring the continuation and further development of the IT facilities. This received mainstream Australian media coverage in 2001 (refer to Press and Media)
Ikan Bilis Solutions
Ikan Bilis Solutions was a computer reselling business that a friend and I established back in the heady days of 1996 when computers were still mostly arcane technology to the average person. I still rank this as one of the best experiences not only for the solid understanding it gave me in computer hardware, but also for the knowledge and experience in running a small business. And why ‘Ikan Bilis'? Well it's a Malaysian word for dried anchovies - we felt our computer business was the small fish in a big pond!
